What changed in August 2026
Discord raised the free limit from 10 MB to 20 MB. The limit applies to every attachment type — video, images, audio and PDFs. Discord also aligned how size is checked: the mobile apps now check the original file size before any compression, the same way desktop already did. That makes uploads from iPhone easier to predict, but phone videos are often large, so you may hit the limit more often from mobile.
Discord says it is testing different limits, so some accounts may temporarily see a higher number. If you need a file to work for everyone in a channel, stick to 20 MB.
A short history
The free limit was 8 MB for years, rose to 25 MB in 2023, dropped to 10 MB about a year and a half later, and is now 20 MB. Many guides and videos still quote the old numbers — which is why SizeFit downloads its preset list instead of hard-coding it.
How to fit a clip under 20 MB
File size is bitrate × duration. For a 20 MB file, the total bitrate (video + audio) can be about 20 × 8000 ÷ seconds:
| Clip length | Total bitrate | Usually looks good at |
|---|---|---|
| 30 seconds | 5,300 kbps | 1080p, even 60 fps gameplay |
| 1 minute | 2,650 kbps | 1080p30 or 720p60 |
| 2 minutes | 1,300 kbps | 720p30 |
| 5 minutes | 530 kbps | 480p |
| 10 minutes | 265 kbps | Too little — split into parts or share a link |
- Trim first. Cutting dead time is the only “free” size reduction.
- Halve the frame rate for longer clips. 60 → 30 fps frees a lot of bits for detail.
- Drop resolution before quality falls apart. A clean 720p beats a blocky 1080p.
- Keep the audio. AAC at 96–128 kbps costs little and avoids the “video has no sound” replies.
- Use H.264 for compatibility. HEVC is smaller but doesn’t preview everywhere.
SizeFit counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes — the smaller of the two common definitions — so a file that fits SizeFit’s target fits Discord’s either way.
FAQ
Does Discord compress videos for me?
Discord checks the original file size against your limit; if it’s over, the upload is refused and you’re offered Nitro. Compress it yourself to stay in control of the quality.
How do I send a longer gameplay clip?
Split it into parts under 20 MB each, or upload it elsewhere and share a link.
Make clips fit Discord — with the sound intact
Pick “Discord” in SizeFit. It compresses to the current limit and checks the output decodes to the last frame and still has audio before you post it.
